Oh la la!

I'm in my fabulous new house. My mom is here in Bordeaux. I'm eating BN cookies and oranges for breakfast. Could life get any better?

Class today

So, I'm taking this class on the history of portraiture and today I was in my T.D class which stands for "travaux dirigé", or in english, directed work. Pretty explains itself. Well, it is a level 3 class, the final year of classes for the equivalent of an american B.A. degree and it is well hard.

I'm quite into the whole painting portraits thing myself and well, learning the history of my passion is intellectually rewarding :) Big smiles! Hmm...but today, the professor rattled off the title, artist, dimensions and dates of over 35 paintings IN FRENCH! I must say it was quite hard to follow.

I am doing an exposé, an oral presentation, on the work Les Ambassadeurs by Holbein in two weeks. Everyone knows how I am with oral presentations. Its kind of funny right now. With each passing day it is destined to become less and less and funny and increasingly terrifying. Something to really look forward to.

I will share a little more about the double portrait once I study it a little more :)

Ta Da!!

Lillet blanc with ICE

Someone stuck a monkey and an alpaca sticker on this sign. I wonder if it was the same person.

Delicious.

Outside the garden of Bordeaux!

Thumbs up for jumps!

Ducks in the garden.

Look at that amazing window inside that house!

Le Palais Gallien an ancient roman arena in Bordeaux. I was just walking down this quiet little street like any other and BAM I saw this. Some of the remnants are just randomly in people's backyards. Funny romans.

Le Samovar

There is this tea place that I like to go to called Le Samovar. If you didn't already know, a samovar is kind of like the little electric tea kettles everyone at college except that older ones exist that are made of metal and run on coal. They are very beautifully strange looking contraptions.

Anyway, there are many little details that I love about Le Samovar. One of the first things is the door. There is no door knob and it feels strangely refreshing and inviting, for some reason, to just push on the door to enter the salon. The second thing I love about this place are the "Où est Charlie?" (i.e. Where is Waldo french style) books that they have for me to enjoy. Okay there are too many things that I really love so I'm just going to list them off.

I also love that the sugar comes in a salt-like shaker thing. I like shaking my sugar.

It's one of the only cafés I've found where I can sit for long long periods of time without having to keep reordering stuff or without feeling like everyone wants me to get the shazam out of there. And then I love love love love love that they have ukulele lessons and ukulele nights where I can come about and listen to a wonderful man and his daughter play music and sing together. And how about a photo? I have so many to add.

I'm at university and it is rainy and my head is rather stuffed and my eyes are feeling pressured. I'm reading this book called Jitterbug perfume and last night I read a phrase that was rather creative in its imagery : "It was settled. He would journey into the east whose pinchers had so recently released October's buoyant moon."

I cut my finger pretty badly last night. It all started before Christmas break when I was running about trying to get all of my final projects done and turned in and I didn't have enough time to clean up my waste before I left for Germany. So I shoved all the dirty dishes in my sink in my room. When I came back two weeks later they were quite disgusting...not as moldy as I thought they were going to be. I've done worse damage before. Anyway, I started to clean them, but they were stacked so high and one blue coffee cup fell over into the sink and was chipped. I forgot about the lingering chip in my sink. I cleaned up all the dishes and washed the sink and didn't see the dangerous bit of ceramic hiding underneath the drain catcher. WELL, yesterday my drain was clogged so I stuck my fingers in to release the CRUD and ended up pricking my finger!!!!!

It is so puffy and bruised I can believe it. I'm quite scared of the dirty little germs from my sink that might have made it into my body via my wound. This is all really nasty and disgusting, but the point is that I need to find the resolve within myself to change my crazy ways.

Sweet guichet in Mannheim.

This is a Germnödel - a bread-like dumpling filled with plum jam and covered with vanilla sauce and poppy seeds.

Pigs are a symbol of luck in Germany, the pigs come in all forms of candy, but I liked the marzipan ones best...of course!
